Cellular automata was mentioned today and also bird flow so i want to mention a book and share a link with you guys. First if you are interested what has been done in the cellular automata field in the art world, Mitchell Whitelaw has written a really nice book covering this called Metacreation.
concerning the bird flow or flocking behavior there is some really nice works done in processing (not all). It's a man called Robert Hodgin who has made it.
